Recap October 29th: REC Meridian Park / INT Aurora Res

Thank you to all 20 of you that showed up on this chilly start of a day to venture out.  Hopefully as the temps rose so did your enthusiasm! As many witnessed - flats are not uncommon this time of year: friendly reminder that as the temperature drops, tube valves can break easier and everyone should try to be more cautious than normal when airing up for your ride.
Stay tuned as next Saturday is looking "iffy"...

RECREATIONAL:
Comments via ride Leader: Trish

7 dedicated riders - Megan, Rachel, John, David, Tony, Rick, and Mike - headed out to Meridian Park on a chilly Saturday morning.  The group stuck together and everyone did 2 laps around the park.  As we were taking our mid-way break, several other cyclists rode by doing laps of their own.  They were riding at a nice clip and David said that if they came by again he'd attach on.  Sure enough, the came by, gave us grief for taking a break and David hopped on.  The rest of the crew headed back to the store.  It was a nicely uneventful ride although some of the group members had a rough start with flats and popped tires before we left the store.  Overall a great ride of about 26 miles!

INTERMEDIATE:
Comments via ride Leader(s): Malia and Jeffrey

A chilly start lead to a beautiful ride today for the Int group.  13 riders joined leader Malia and sweep Jeffery out to Aurora Reservoir; Donna and Malia did their best to stick with the guys who were pushing a brisk pace.  Thankfully there was only one icy spot heading out of Cherry Creek over a wooden bridge which had melted and cleared up on our return.  The group held a solid pace and had a great day, especially as the temperature improved.  It was a day for flats.  We delayed our start while someone who had picked up a leak on the way over changed a tube.  Then, our ride was punctuated with breaks when two riders got flats over the course of route. The more adventurous of the two involved a flat, followed by a pinched tube and then a broken valve stem, and at least three CO2 cartridges. All this while standing in the cold wind blowing across the reservoir.  Jeffrey did a great job as sweep helping to make sure that each rider was able to get back and riding again.

Saturday Group Ride Oct 29th: REC- Meridian Park / INT- Aurora Res

Happy (Halloween) Friday All....

I hope everyone made it through our 1st "storm" of the year.  I see a lot of tree limbs were not so lucky :(  While no additional moisture is expected, our temps are predicted to be in the mid-high 50s...but keep in mind that's the HIGH for the day.  So, battling the wind chill while accelerating forward is going to take some clever layering.  Anybody riding in a gorilla suit?  Darth Vader?

Thank you in advance for checking your
tire pressure, spokes, pedal tightness and computers BEFORE our 9:30 am departure.

INTERMEDIATE: (16-18 mph average)
Malia will take the group out to and around Aurora Res before heading back to complete this 46 miler.  Be prepared for some cooler temps coming off the lake as well as dangerous icy spots along the pathway.  http://connect.garmin.com/activity/39597564

RECREATIONAL: (13-15 mph average)

Join Trish as she takes you out to the ole Meridian loop.  http://connect.garmin.com/activity/39932602  Typically this route will pull 26 miles but that's a give-n-take, based on the number of loops you care to challenge yourself with.

Jeffrey will be sweeping along side the group most in need.

Recap October 22nd: REC Sprint workouts / INT Bear Creek

A glorious day...for riding, even though the weather was perfect, some may have unnecessarily hung up the road cleats for the season.  A few riders from the advanced group joined up with the Intermediate team for a healthy 16 riders as they headed west to Bear Creek Lake, while Justin led a tight pack of 6 out to Sports Authority field to practice some sprint workouts around the parking lot.  Here's what you missed (photo link): https://picasaweb.google.com/home

RECREATIONAL:
Comments via ride Leader(s): Justin Murphy

An elite group of 6 men comprised the rec group on Saturday as Justin led them, all of similar riding level, up the Cherry Creek pathway to Confluence Park.  From there they skirted around a 5k that was going on at Confluence and took the Platte south bound to Sports Authority Field @ Mile Hi.  A great run on the west side of the stadium offered an inspiring backdrop of the stadium and sculptures and a slight incline perfect for sprint work.  The riders took several warmup runs before performing 3 sprints each for time. Then they paired up in two's according to time and raced! First-timer Joe and second-timer Andy loved it! And so did regulars Damon, Eric, David, and Rick. After a great acceleration workout, the group hit Starbucks at REI to fuel the return trip!

Times (in secs):
David: 4.00, 4.62, 4.34
Andy: 4.36, 4.82, 4.37
Eric: 4.87, 5.03, 4.66
Damon: 5.15, 4.91, 4.86
Rick: 4.92, 5.10, 4.86
Joe: 4.70, 5.10, 4.57
Justin: 4.19, 4.10, 4.00

Excellent job all the way around - we'll plan on adding more of those next year!
Comment from Andy: Had a very enjoyable, and fast, ride to Sports Authority Field on
Saturday, led by Justin. We did some sprint work which we all agreed was good fun.

Comments via ride Leader(s): Patrice and Chris

We had 18 riders including our 2 BV lead riders....one of which decided to sit at the back of the pack, get a flat, then miss the turn home! Oops!

We had exceptional weather this past weekend...sunny and warm. The wind kicked up coming back to the shop but it was very tolerable. We stopped at the Conocco station to refuel b/4 we headed thru Bare Lake State Park and attacked the hill.

Everyone ate their Wheaties that morning as the group was fast and furious! A good time was had by all!

Until next Saturday...have a grand week!

RECREATIONAL: (13-15 mph average)

Join Justin on this new adventure:   Head south past Confluence park along the Platte pathway till you cross over to Invesco stadium.  Here you will gather around and cheer each other on as you take laps and perhaps a gusty sprint dash around the stadium!  A great benefit as you work on accelerations in order to get comfortable with speed increases and bike handling (in a safe manner of course).  A few laps and then maybe a treat at REI before heading back...http://connect.garmin.com/activity/88789547

TOM will be sweeping along side the group most in need.

Recap Ocotber 15tH: REC Wheatridge HS / INT *Surrey Ridge

Our riders had a surprise of "cooler-than-expected" weather this morning as the clouds and light breeze held the predicted 80 degrees at bay.  Thankfully the meteorologists were spot on and everything turned out beautifully.  A huge thank you to all 30+ riders that came out to start their weekend off with us in the middle of October!!

RECREATIONAL:
Comments via ride Leader(s): Heidi and Justin

Heidi and Justin lead 11 riders out to Wheatridge High School near Kipling and 32nd.  We covered exactly 35.0 miles.  The temps hovered in the 60's for the majority of ride - perfect cycling weather.  The sun finally appeared accompanied by some warmth for the last few miles back to the store.  We had a strong group today, averaging around 15-18 mph overall.

A first-timer to our group, Sharon (pictured), is one of our many strong rec riders and she really hung tough today! Originally from Fla, she came to Denver and started as a physical therapist at Craig Hospital and has been doing that for the last 36 years!!  A seasoned rider, she also swims runs hikes kayaks skies and  snowshoes. She was a great addition to the group because of her enthusiasm and great safety communication with her fellow riders.

Great ride everyone, thanks for joining in.  Let's cross our fingers that Saturdays for the remainder of October continue to be as pleasant.  See you all soon!

Comments via ride Leader(s): Patrice and Chris

Chris and Patrice guided our 16 riders out to Surrey Ridge which was a first time ride for both of them.  We started our ride by heading to the Meridian like we usually do by riding down Dayton then it was on to Inverness Pkwy.  From there is was on to Surrey Drive where we were met with a bit of a head wind and some nice gradual climbing on S. Havana St.

We stopped at our half way point which was a Conoco station (if I'm not mistaken) where we shared some stories, got a little food and drink.  Our return trip started with a short but fun trip through some residential neighborhoods where we were treated to some tight corners and some fast rollers.  We quickly returned to S. Havana St. where we were lucky enough to encounter a tail wind the majority of the way home.  Cruising down Peoria St. we were riding between 35-38 mph.  Needless to say it made for a quick trip back to the shop.  This turned out to be a really nice route and the weather was amazing for this time of year.  Thanks to those who helped guide us on this new route and to those who joined us.  See you next Saturday!

Recap Ocotber 1st: REC Reverse Orchard Loop / INT *Twin Sisters

What a beautiful day we had once again, days like these are limited so I hope you enjoy them.  Sunny skies and temps in the low 80's accompanied us on our ride today and were the reason we had such a big turn out for both groups.  18 folks from I3C joined us to enjoy a fabulous (October) day in Colorado, bringing our total group to almost 40 riders!

RECREATIONAL:
Comments via ride Leader: Jeffrey
It was a beautiful morning and 11 people joined Jeffrey for the Recreation groups trip out to do the Orchard Loop.   As with the Intermediates, our group included some riders from the International Christian Cycling Club who were a fun edition.  Coming out of Cherry Creek State Park we were slowed by three flat tires!  This is not a good percentage shared among twelve riders.  We had a slight misadventure, with the group following Jeffrey through two wrong turns – one of which landed us on a bike path spur that dead-ended in a swampy bit of neighborhood park.  We turned around and Eric came forward to lead something approximating the planned link.  Despite the flat tires and wrong terms in was a fun ride and we arrived back at the shop with about 32 miles to show.

INTERMEDIATE:
Comments via ride Leader (Chris):  Our adventure stated by riding through the CC res, down the gun club road to Jordan.  Then it was on to Briarwood to Potomac and then Chambers which lead us to the 470 trail.  From there we road back to Jordan and made our first pit stop at the Loaf-n-jug, after refueling we hopped back on Jordan and cruised down to Hess where we made a left and then a right onto Motsenbocker.
