Recap September 24th: REC Meredian Loop / INT Aurora Res

Awesome!  Close to 40 riders joined up today to tour de Aurora and Centennial!  Looks like we pulled a few newbies...we like it!
RECREATIONAL:
Comments via ride Leader(s):Jeffrey & Tom

The first ride of the fall fell on a warm pretty day.  18 people showed up for the 2.5 hour Recreational Ride as we did the Meridian loop. A fairly quick pace was set with several stops to allow for regrouping.  At Meridian we divided into three groups, a) those who waited in shade  and recovered for the return, b) those who did a lap, and c) those who cracked off TWO laps.  Heading back Jeffrey led the main group to the E470 trail, then east Jordon and back through the State Park.  Tom led a slightly more direct root and beat the main group back to Bicycle Village.  We are continuing to attract new riders as we move into the fall.  Lena is a new “senior” level tri-athlete came out to work on her bike skills.  Andy, a newly arrived British IT worker turned out, expressed caution about the pace at the first stop, then hung with the front bunch the rest of the morning.  17yr old Christopher turned up with a heavy and elderly mountain bike, he is inheriting as his mother moves up to a sleek new carbon road bike.  Christopher rode strongly, clearly had a good time, and we think Mom may have to think about buying two new bikes this year.  Christmas is coming!

A few people lost sight of the leaders (sorry about that!) and came back on their own.  Jeffrey brought the majority in with him and Tom came back with Carol. Carol works for the state of CO in health and human services placing refugees who seek asylum and wish to live in our fair state and enjoys her two dogs; one a chow mix and the other is a pug mix.

The second day of fall still felt like summer and produced excellent riding weather with a turnout in the intermediate group to match!  The pack of around 20 was showing late season form and took off quickly with leaders   Justin and Patrice along.  The pack got to the top of the Cherry Creek Dam quickly, but in the park Justin flatted and Patrice assisted with repair one-of-two on the day.  After meeting back up the group tore up the rolling hills on Arapahoe and battled the wind around Aurora Res.  After fueling up at Walgreen's the usual suspects pushed the pace back home, and everyone got plenty of fun in the sun.

Recap September 17th: REC Den Triangle / INT Golden

A huge thanks to all for joining us once again for a beautiful fall day of riding.  Let's hope we have any more glorious days like this before "some of us" hang up our bikes till the spring.

RECREATIONAL:
Comments via ride Leader(s):Jeffrey & Malia

The clouds cleared from our gray and wet week to provide perfect riding conditions for Saturday's Rec ride.  Jeffrey and Malia lead a group of 14 riders on the reverse route of the "Denver Triangle".  Making a tour of the bike paths connecting the metro area, the group started from the shop and headed out on the Cherry Creek path to REI.  Heading back towards the shop on the South Platte the group had to take it slow through the path along Sports Authority Field as the crowds were gathering for the annual CU vs. CSU game.  While some riders wanted to stop and stock up on stadium food, we pushed onward and regrouped at the bridge before heading up Dartmouth.  With a variety of riders in the group and a fair amount of uphill to tackle before making it back to the shop, Jeffrey and Malia split the group into two levels.  Malia took the more advanced riders at a brisk pace through Happy Canyon where they ended up at the shop completing just under 32 miles in two hours.  Jeffrey continued to push his group and they followed the same route and finished not far behind the first group.

Even as we move into the fall we are attracting new riders.  Mohamed was here for the first time, had a good ride and promises to be back.  Theresa, newly arrived from LA, was adjusting to the altitude and arrived without water – but other riders kept her hydrated and encouraged. Relative new comer Brenda was back and made a solid ride on a hybrid bike that is a bit short for her.  She is going to be faster when we get her on a road bike that fits!

Malia would like to give a special shout out to David for joining us today- after an initial missed break from a fall he took during an earlier group ride in the summer, David was out sporting his stylish pink cast.  David was dying to get back out on his bike, even if it meant riding the shorter route than the intermediate ride he typically joins.  Thanks so much for getting back in the saddle with us David!  Great job to everyone who joined the Rec ride this week and hope to see everyone out next Saturday!

INTERMEDIATE:
Comments via ride Leader(s): Justin & Heidi

A pack of 20 intermediates traveled across the metro area on Saturday from Aurora to Golden with ride leaders Justin and Heidi.  The weather was superb with blue skies and cool but comfortable temps.  The front runner usual suspects such as Jeff, Solomon, and Chris pushed the pace down the Cherry Creek path showing good late-season form.  Interestingly enough we ran into a d-tour at REI in Downtown due to a running race taking place, took an alternative route across I-25 and ran into the running race yet again and had to maneuver through the line of runners.  We made through and continued on to Golden via 32nd.

A couple from New Jersey joined us who had never ridden more than 35 miles back home.  Congrats to Robin, a breast cancer survivor, as she and her husband successfully completed the 47 miles (at altitude!) in preparation for a 50-mile fundraiser back home on the East Coast in the next week to celebrate their wedding anniversary of 19 years.  A couple ladies from the Women's Group Ride joined us as well.

After a brief regroup at REI the pack pushed through the highlands and before long were at the gas station on Ford to refuel. A flat and different paces split the group in half on the trip home, but all finished well and had a great ride!  We averaged 16-19 mph as the group was somewhat divided, Justin and the regulars lead a very strong pace at the front of the pack.  Great ride everyone.

Recap September 10th: REC Sloan's Lake / INT Chris' Loop

We were treated to another phenomenal day consisting of clear sunny skies and great temps.  We had two great rides on Saturday, the Rec. ride was lead by Jeffery and the Intermediate ride was lead by Chris.

RECREATIONAL:
Comments via ride Leader: Jeffrey

It is so lovely to ride in early fall sunshine, and our rec ride attracted three brand new riders and some friends we had not seen in a while.  The newbies included Adam, riding a 25 year old mountain bike that he probably bought new when  he was 40.  He proved to be a solid mid-pack rider.  Some of us will be in trouble if he decides to buy a lighter modern bike.  The returnees included our Special Olympian Alex who worked hard to hang in on his prized Schwinn.

We rode down the Cherry Creek Trail to Confluence Park then looped out to 23rd and around Sloans’ Lake.  Our stronger riders cracked off two laps before we reconnected and reversed our route riding back up the trail to Bicycle Village.

Jeffrey was leading this group of 18 on his own, and expresses his thanks to Travis who graciously encouraged the back of the bunch through the ride.

What another amazing day we had on Saturday.  Gorgeous weather, perfect temperature and a great group made this a really enjoyable ride.  Things started off with a quick trip through the CC Res. and then it was onto Broncos Parkway and up to Inspiration.  We followed Inspiration down and made a loop around Canterberry which has a nice little climb and descent.  It was back on the CC trail to a Loaf-n-jug on the corner of 470 and Jordan.  After refueling we had our usual quick trip down Jordan and then it was back into the CC Res. and back to the shop.

37 riders...what a great turnout on a long holiday weekend!
A huge thanks to each of you, new or regular, for joining our group...we appreciate you!

RECREATIONAL:
Comments via ride Leader(s):Heidi & Tom

Ride leaders Heidi and Tom joined forces for a 2nd week in a row and lead the rec ride today out to Broncos Parkway (soccer fields).  Here is where we split and Tom took 9 riders back to ride the published route while Heidi took the remaining half, (determined that extra miles were much needed) out past Lincoln and returned on Peoria just east of Skyridge Medical Center.  The group that road the longer distance covered 39 miles at an average pace of 16 mph.  Damon unfortunately broke a spoke on the return and had to take an easy stroll back but has a replacement wheel at home.  Great job everyone adding those additional 15 or so miles and keeping a strong pace.  The weather today was a welcoming coolness, hovering in the upper sixties.  Fall has arrived.  See you all again soon! Enjoy your long holiday weekend.

Comments via ride Leader(s):Patrice & Jeffrey

What a great ride today!  It was our first crisp morning, with several of our intermediate riders showing up in arm warmers or jackets including four or five newbies.  Eighteen people set off with Patrice and Jeffrey for a longer that usual ride. The pace was strong and quickly, perhaps in celebration of the delightful temps. British David took several more pics as my camera was acting up. Hopefully he will send it to BV email.

Patrice had a wonderful chat w/ Karen who made a huge impression on her...after 30 yrs of smoking, Karen quit last year and it has changed her life around for the better! Her message is "balance" which is something we all need to look at and strive to achieve!

David (as in British David, Hail to the Queen!) was wonderful as he helped Patrice herd the cats at the back of the pack! Thx David!  All together we put in sixty miles, riding south down Jordan to the E470, down the E470 trail to the top of the dam at Chatfield Reservoir, then north along the Platte River trail to REI, and up the Cherry Creek Trail to Bicycle Village.  There were lots of people out enjoying the holiday weekend on the trail.  Perhaps it was the pace or the distance, but we had three people who had trouble with leg cramps in the last ten miles or so.  Luckily one of them was Conner, a massage therapist making his first ride of the season, who explained what was happening with the muscles and how to respond.  Much more helpful than Jeffrey, who kept muttering “ electrolytes, drink something with electrolytes.”

will lead you out southwest and west to hook up with the 470 bike path as you trek out to Chatfield Reservoir and back.  Not a lot of break areas along the way so hydrate up NOW and bring along plenty of fluids and electrolytes.  Should get around 50 miles on this one.

Tom and Heidi will take you out to the Soccer complex in Centennial and then based on your level of energy and ambition...some hill work or laps in Cherry Creek Reservoir before returning to the store.  This route plus the CC work could reel in around 30+ miles: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/86375373
