GROUP RIDE Saturday 31st Cherry Creek/Aurora Reservoir

Hello fellow riders, can you believe tomorrow will be the last day of July already?!?!  What better way to close the month than to join us for yet another great ride.  This week we are NOT offering a social ride but will have both a Recreational and an Advanced ride.  Check the tire pressure, fill the water bottles, spray on the sunscreen and come on down.  Forecast is a beautiful 86...

*Note: Tri for the Cure packet pickup will be at BV on Saturday morning so parking could be a bit crowded.  Thanks in advance for your patience.*

RECREATIONAL:
Join Justin and Tom for a ride out to and around Cherry Creek reservoir.  Yes, there is that nasty climb as you head UP to the reservoir but then you steady out as you ride around the outskirts and once inside the scenery just takes your mind off your pedaling.  Once in the reservoir don't be surprised if one of your leaders doesn't add a small surprise of bonus hill work or an extra loop around the tower.  In the end it should be a great day and an awesome ride!

ADVANCED:
Chris and Malia have this one covered as they tour another local reservoir...Aurora Res!  A longer stretch than Cherry Creek this ride will be very hilly on the way out and back with some flats going through the Cherry Creek Res. and the loop around the Aurora Res.  Taking Orchard out to Liverpool then onto Arapahoe road which will take us right to the Aurora Res. One great 8-mile lap around the Res. a bathroom/water break and back to BV.  This group rides a FASTER/STRONGER pace than the Intermediates and are always trying to improve ride time and pace lining.  This ride IS a "drop-ride"...please be comfortable riding strong or be prepared to be dropped on this level of ride.

**This Saturday is a great opportunity to test ride a Cervelo bike!  What?  You don't know what that is...?   Come find out...bring your pedals, helmet, and shorts and sign one out for a spin.**

RECAP: July 24th Spillway - Centennial - Inspiration

SOCIAL:
"We got the chain fixed on the path -but not with much finesse!"
“Well, we had an eventful and beautiful ride this morning.  Love the Highland Canal trail because of all the shade over the path and quiet setting.  So great to have a newbie on the ride – Maggie!  I think we got her hooked on the 1st ride.   She’s hoping to switch to an evening work shift next weekend so she can ride again.  Jeff has been officially been named “Jinx”.  Third week in row & third major on-route issue:  he’s been back after a blown-out wheel, minor crash, and now a broken chain.  You’re a champ!  Glad you keep comin’ back, buddy.  We’ll always been there to take care of you and you sure make life interesting.  I worked really hard on selling him
on the idea of a new bike (he’s gotta convince his wifey).” - Lani
Social Ride Stats:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/41649804?sms_ss=gmail

RECREATIONAL:
Great temperature and a well paired group of 16 made for a most enjoyable ride.  Tom did a super job deciphering Jacquette's map of loopy-loops around Bronco Parkway and everyone seemed to enjoy new routes within Cherry Creek Reservoir.  Feedback was positive and hill work was balanced out with flats and rollers for a great 34 miler.  Happy to report only one flat and one semi-departure from the group :)  Hope to see you at the next BV group ride!

INTERMIDATE:
A strong peleton of 21 riders was paced by veteran group ride leader Chris and chased by rookie Justin. Ideal weather was welcomed by all in contrast to last week's triple-digit heat, and everyone seemed to be happy to be outside enjoying the mild summer day! Heading out on the familiar Cherry Creek Trail around the reservoir and through the park, all were warming up and getting comfortable. As the stronger riders held a strong pace line on the flats, a rider lost a water bottle but was quickly paced back to the group by sweeper Justin. After following the usual trip to Centennial Airport, the group headed east towards Inspiration and began some solid residential climbs. All riders stayed strong including first-timer Jill, who beforehand wasn't sure whether she wanted to do the rec ride or tackle the tougher ride. She ended up hanging with the pack and having a blast! Making their way through Parker to the E-470 trail, two mechanicals gave the group a chance to rest and the opportunity for people to help each other out. All was well as the crew cruised over to Peoria and back past the airport, through the park, and around the reservoir back home. 44 total miles and a great day was had by all!

SATURDAY GROUP RIDE: July 24th

To those who braved and sweltered(!) the heat last Saturday...you will appreciate a forecast of 78 this weekend!  Will we match...or surpass...last week's record breaking attendance of 56?

SOCIAL:
Based on our turnout this Saturday, we are prepared to offer another social ride.  This relatively flat 21- mile offers a tour around some Aurora parks and golf courses as we branch off the Cherry Creek pathway onto the High Line Canal.  We'll circle through Aurora and hook up with W Tollgate Creek then wind our way back to the CC pathway as we head back to Bicycle Village.  Remember: this group offers a slower pace for casual riders with plenty of opportunity to stop and enjoy your surroundings.

RECREATIONAL:
We are "flying high" this weekend as we head south on CC pathway catching up with Dayton near CCHS and out to Centennial Airport.  From there we will wind our way back to CC Reservoir and home.  But wait...there's more!  Be ready for some last minute surprises as we may add an extra loop or two or practice some hill work(!) inside the reservoir.    Not only does this route provide you 30+/- rolling miles, but our solid pace (avg 10-15mph) combined with the hill work, will let your legs know you did something today...all the while having fun!

INTERMEDIATE:
This weekend we will be riding our classic Inspiration route.  We will start out by riding through the CC Res. to Arapahoe.  From there we will get on Broncos Pkwy and ride down Inspiration for a change.  We'll make our usual pit stop at the gas station on Parker/Cottonwood.  Following our refueling break we will take C 470 to Peoria and then to Potomac.  From that point on we will back track our out route back through the CC Res.  There will be some fast flats so we can practice our pace line, some nice climbs to work on your strength and a fast descent down Inspiration to work on your bike handling.  We are looking at an average speed of 16-18mph and will top out around 35-40mph going down Inspiration.  Mileage will be around 40-45 miles and we are looking at a ride time of 2.5-3hrs.

Come prepared with the usual necessities such as food, water, extra tube, some sort of inflation device.  There is a threat of a thunderstorm in the afternoon but we should be back before we might have to worry about that.

See you all tomorrow!

RECAP: July 17th REI/Parker and Pinery Parkway

What a record breaking Saturday- record heat, record turnout and record fun!  56 brave souls started the day as temperatures reached 105 degrees.  I know I went through 6 bottles during the Intermediate ride so I hope everyone kept drinking and eating during their rides and enjoyed lots of cold beverages once they made it home.  This was our first Saturday with three different group rides and with such amazing turnout, we'll keep the Social group ride as an option through August.

Social- New group ride leader Anaka lead nine riders out with the Recreational group to REI on the Cherry Creek path.  Under her great leadership and support, this group made a fun 24 mile loop.  You can check out their stats from the Garmin on Anaka's bike by following this link: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/40862393

Recreational- Tom and new group ride leader Justin had a sold turnout for the Rec ride.  21 riders enjoyed a nice ride out to REI and back.  The group was comprised of a fun mix of levels and abilities which kept Tom and Justin dancing on their pedals.

Intermediate- Chris and I lead a strong group of 20 through Parker and out to Pinery Parkway via the Cherry Creek trail.  While some may say that I jinxed us claiming that there wasn't much wind, we had a great tailwind on the way back which helped to cool our heals and push us back to the shop.  The heat took its toll on a couple of our stronger riders, not to mention 2 flats through the same stretch (special thanks to Sean for being Donna's "knight in shinning armor" and Dan, it was NOT my fault!), but we all made it back to the shop and couldn't wait to get out of the sun.  Sweeping up the pack, I calculated 55 miles in 3.5 hrs- good work group!

SATURDAY GROUP RIDE: July 17th

Get those tires inflated and be ready to ride (in the heat) this Saturday!  Aside from a Rec and Advanced ride we are ADDING a Social Group.  Social riders are morely likely to be "flat-bar" (mountain, hybrid, cruiser) or those who own a road bike that want a more casual pace.  Plenty of stops to rest your legs and visit.  If you find the recreatioal groups have been a bit to fast, this is a great alternative to get out and spin your wheels.

SOCIAL:
A very non-intimidating pace for all to enjoy. We'll be taking the Cherry Creek Pathway for a 22 mile roundtrip to Downtown REI.  It will be a slight downhill on our way out, so remeber to save some energy for the ride back (up).  Opportunity for a bathroom break or an iced coffee at REI (bring $$).

RECREATIONAL:
The pace on this 32+ miler is designed for the novice cyclist who has been riding for a while, or comes from a strong background in sport and exercise.  We're doing our "Denver Triangle" - leading the Social Group out to REI for a quick break and then continuing on the S.Platte pathway to Dartmouth.  We'll head east through the Denver Tech Center than barrel down from the top of Cherry Creek Dam before heading back to BV.

ADVANCED:
This route is built for individuals who ride their bikes every day, participate in century rides, bike tours, or even race throughout the summer.  NEW route for you all this week!!  We're heading straight south towards Parker...bet y'all didn't know that Cherry Creek path carries on to Pinery Parkway.  Prepare yourself for a steady, challenging climb at mile 25 as we whind up through some neighborhoods.  Total distance will be 55+ miles with a pit stops at E470 & Jordan Rd gas station on our way out and the return home.

Any one looking for a HOT new bike?   Take this opportunity to pedal a high performance ride from one of the most elite bike manufacturers in the industry!  Cervelo eRide will be at the Aurora Bicycle Village with their entire fleet of demos - Saturday, July 31st.  Bring your pedals, helmet, and shorts and sign one out for a spin.

Find out more details at:  http://www.cervelo.com/en_us/bikes/eride/

See you all Saturday morning.  Rub that sunscreen on thick and make sure to fill up BOTH waterbottles, cause it's going to be a scorcher out there.

Malia, Chris, Tom, Justin & Anaka    :-)

RECAP: Group Ride July 10th Meridian / Golden

What a super day we had today.  We had a great turn out for both groups and weather was really cooperative with temps  in the 80's and sunny skies with very little wind.

Thanks to all you "rec" riders who joined us on a somewhat discombobulated ride out to Meridian Park and back for a total of 25.58 miles. Despite a mechanical breakdown (spoke), losing our "sweep", and the group splitting in half for the return...I think it was a good ride. (We do our best to entertain you!) Many of you mentioned that you were pleased to learn this new route/direction for future rides. We are always working on coming up with new (safe) routes and welcome suggestions too!

I encourage you to look at the Garmin link of our rides today. You may be surprised to learn that we had an elevation gain of 1,148'...only 26' less than the intermediate ride which had 1,174' out to Golden! The key difference being their climbs were over a shorter distance whereas ours were gradual over the entire way out. We also reached a higher elevation of 5,964' verses 5,715'. Kelly and Kristy will be pleased to learn that my calorie burn was about 1 1/2 margaritas ;)

We all look forward to seeing you on future rides...remember to tell your friends and don't forget 1) Monday night 6pm clinic and 2) Cervelo test ride on the 31st. Until then..."tail winds"

Here are the Rec. Ride stats...

~Jacquette

The Intermediate Group had a super ride out to Golden again.  We did beat our previous record time of 2hrs 40 min. by 5 min.  I'm sure next time we head out there we could cut another 5 min off that.  Every one rode really well and we had some good pace lines going with every one taking turn pulling.  The only thing I don't like about that ride is going by the Coors plant, man that stinks!  We had a few people go off on their own and climb Look Out, I hope you guys had a great climb and safe descent.

Unfortunately we had another little accident this weekend.  While riding back to the shop on the CC Trail Jeff touched my back wheel and went down.  Luckily he was unhurt and he climbed back on his bike and rode back to the shop.  Hope your not too sore today Jeff...  Other than that we had a really smooth ride and I'm glad every one enjoyed themselves.

Next week we will have a new route for you guys to look forward to, we will be riding out to the Pinery Parkway.   It is a really nice ride and a great climb towards the end.  Thanks to all of you for coming out and riding with us and I look forward to seeing you next week!

Saturday Group Ride July 10th Meridian Park / Golden

Hello every one! I hope you are all doing well... Its that time again, for this weekends ride preview. The weather looks like it should cooperate with us as they are predicting a high of 89 but a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. We should be back in time before we have to worry about that though. We have two great rides planned again this weekend for you. The Rec. Group will be heading to Meridian Park and the Intermediates will be riding out to Golden. Golden is a group favorite and I've had a few requests to climb Look Out but we won't be able to this time out, sorry guys. We do have a new route planned for the 17th for the Intermediate riders that has a really nice climb towards the end so you guys can look forward to that.

We are going to have a few changes to the Intermediate and Advanced rides from this point on... From now on the Intermediate and Advanced rides will be DROPPED RIDES. We are going to try to do a better job of putting people in the proper group so that we can do the ride we promised you at the pace and time we planned for. We will be stopping less frequently so we can maintain a good rhythm and pace on the rides and aren't making the whole group wait for an extended periods of time. We have different routes every week with different mileages so for example you find your self at the end of the Intermediate group one week and aren't sure that you have the fitness to do the planned ride the following week then we suggest that for that week you may want to ride with the Rec. Group. Then you can feel free to rejoin the Intermediates the following week if the mileage and pace are some thing you can handle.   Also if you don't know the route or are new to the ride I would suggest that you either follow a group ride leader or ask what the route is so you don't end up getting lost or going on the wrong route.

Also we may be adding a 3rd group that would be a "social ride." This will be for beginners, first time bike buyers and people who are more interested in just having a nice leisure ride and will not have to worry about keeping a certain speed or pace. Stay tuned for that...

REC. RIDE- The Rec. Group will be taking a leisure ride out to Meridian Park. This group is designed for the novice cyclist or someone who knows very little about the sport, but still wants to be fit and strong by the ride. The route will be a fairly flat ride other than the few hills you'll have to climb on the way to the CC Res. This route will take us through the CC Res. to Jordan where we will cross Arapahoe and get on Potomac. We will then ride by the Centennial Airport to C 470. Then we will ride to Meridian Park and will back track our same route out. I am guessing you will be gone for 2-2.5hrs or so. I would expect you will average 12-15 miles per hour and top out at around 20-25mph. Mileage for this ride I am guessing will be around 30-35 miles.

INTERMEDIATE RIDE- The Intermediate Group will be riding out to Golden which is a group favorite it is for participants who have been riding for a while, or come from a strong background in sport and exercise. This route is fairly flat as well although the route is mostly up hill on the way there and down hill on the way back. Last time we rode this route we cut 20 min. off our previous time. I challenge you to cut another 10 min off that... We will start by taking CC trail towards REI then get on 26th till it t-bones into 70. Then we will take the frontage road to 32nd which will lead us all the way into Golden. We will stop at a local gas station to refuel and then backtrack the route we took on the way out. We will be gone for about 3.5 hrs and should average around 17-19mph. On the way back we will see speeds around 30mph.  If you want to see the stats from our last ride out to Golden you can click on link to view them so you can have a better idea of whether or not this is a ride for you.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/36386456

Make sure you guys bring water, food, an extra tube and some sort of inflation device in case you get a flat. I can not stress enough how important it is to eat and drink during rides. Especially if you are riding in either the Intermediate or Advanced Group. Eating and drinking enough through out the ride can make the difference between having a good day or one of your worst. You should be drinking one water bottle per hr. if not more and constantly eating during the ride.

Keep in mind that on the 31st we are having a Cervelo free demo day! Click on the link and register below...

I hope you all have a good Friday and I look forward to seeing you all Saturday!

RECAP: Group Ride July 3rd Highline canal / Chatfield

What can I say about Saturday's ride other than it was pretty interesting...  We had some people take off on their own and ride their own route for a bit, we road into Chatfield for a change and then I had a nice fall.  Not one of our better days.  The weather was great though, sunny and warm temps.  I was definitely feeling the heat on the way back, I hope every one ate and drank enough.

The Rec. Group had a nice ride out to the High-line canal.  I am sorry I have not done this route so I am not sure which route was taken.
The Advanced Ride started out riding through the CC Res. to Jordan and then we tried to regroup at Jordan & Arapahoe but some people had a different idea...  Unfortunately we had a group of people make their own route and decided not to follow the ride leader.  The rest of us continued on the planned ride route which followed Briarwood to Potomac then Chambers to C 470.  We all eventually regrouped by Park Meadows mall.  We then road down 470 to our usual gas station where we took a break from the sun and our saddles.  After getting some nutrition and conversation in we headed back to the trail and went into Chatfield where we rode up to the top of the damn for a change.  We then back tracked until hoping on the S Platte trail which we rode up to REI.  Just before we arrived at REI I had a nice little wipe out.  I have some nice road rash and bruising from it but luckily nothing broken and my bike was ok other than a few scraps here and there.  We arrived at REI for one more break before heading back to the shop.  I'm not sure about you guys but the heat was getting to me on the way back to the shop, I was dragging along it felt like.  We finally made it back to the shop, I went home to clean and bandage my wounds and I hope you guys went home and drank some more water and ate some food.

Here is a little eye candy from the ride...

Rec. Group taking a break

Every one enjoying a little break and some shade.

ahhhhhh, its good to relax.

Taking a quick break at the top of Chatfield damn.

Group Ride July 3rd CC Spillway / Chatfield

Well it is that time again... It's almost time for the weekend and a holiday one at that! Our two rides this weekend consist of the Rec. Group riding the Highline canal/Cherry Creek spillway and we are having another Intermediate/Advanced ride to Chatfield/REI. The weather looks like it should be a miserable 91 degrees and sunny skies... should be rough :)

Any one that participates in either group ride this weekend will receive a FREE Camelbak Podium bottle!

Also, on July 31st you will be able to demo a Cervelo bike! This will be your chance to ride one if you've always wanted but haven't been able to. Click on the link for more details and registration.
http://www.cervelo.com/en_us/bikes/eride/

The Rec. Group will be traveling the Highline Canal, Tollgate Trail and the Cherry Creek Spillway. This route is a flat 20 miles, that explores smooth trails with steady street crossings. Even though the route is flat, you will be challenged to continuously pedal to keep your momentum and a steady pace of approximately 11-12 mph. The trails cross creeks and meander through and around some great parks. The trails are in excellent condition (nice and smooth) for the most part and away from busy streets. I'm sorry I don't know this exact route so I can't give you turn by turn directions like that of the Intermediate/Advanced ride.

The Intermediate/Advanced ride to Chatfield will start with us riding to the CC Res. and will continue as follows...
-get on Jordan
-pass Arapahoe
-Rt. on Briarwood
-Left at Potomac
-straight to C-470
-Rt on C-470 bike path/follow all the way down to Chatfield.
-follow road up to the top of Chatfield damn.
-back track to S. Platte trail.
-Take Platte trail north to REI.
-Cherry Creek trail back to the shop.

This ride will be around 60 miles I'm guessing cause we will ride into Chatfield this time and climb the small hill to the top of the damn to add a little more mileage on and do something different. We will also take Chamber to 470 vs. Peoria like we usually do. Ride time of 3.5-4hrs and it will start out fairly flat with a few hills on Chambers. It is mostly down hill to Chatfield with a little climb inside Chatfield and then the Platte and CC are pretty flat. It will be a pretty nice ride.  We will break at the usual gas station on 470 just before entering Chatfield and also again at REI.

Bring the usual essentials, water, food, extra tube and an inflation device. I'd also suggest wearing sunscreen. I look forward to seeing you guys on Saturday!

Regards,
Chris
